Full Description

  • Hydrochemistry of glacier melt water
Developing environmental tracers to track glacier melt water through regional hydrologic cycle. Looking to explore relationships between concentration of chemical species (ions & isotopes) from surface water samples and first order geomorphologic, geologic an topographic parameters. Students with some experience with GIS and spread sheet operations preferred. Work involves creating and combining coverages from topographic maps. Posted by Bryan Mark 09/27/06

  • Glacial flour flux
Using sediment cores from Andean glacier lakes in combination with measurements of suspended sediments to derive the change in sedimentation over time related to glacial cover (erosion). This project requires some integration of digital elevation models (DEMs), satellite imagery, and GPS field maps of moraines to calculate/model glacierization and locate optimal sites to install sediment traps; could also lead to summer field work in Peru. GIS experience preferred. Working in collaboration with others; funding available for field work. Posted by Bryan Mark 09/27/06

  • LGM tropical snowline database update
Further develop international database of tropical glacier snowlines at important times; involves developing critical understanding of geomorphologic parameters, as well as database structures. Need to translate Excel datasheets to Access format (or other relational database). Further goal to put on web server, with interactive components. Many important research issues in exploring relationships between variables. Also involve integrating satellite data. Posted by Bryan Mark 09/27/06

  • Inverse modeling of tropical glaciers
Using snowline database with 2D energy balance model in collaboration with other researchers to reconstruct tropical glaciers. Requires GIS work, climate data synthesis, and energy balance modeling. Training of good student possible, with travel to other institute. Posted by Bryan Mark 09/27/06
