Each graduate
student in the Department of Geography must fulfill the core requirements
listed here, regardless of specialization. Please be aware that these
requirements are subject to change and the definitive version which
appears in the Department of Geography Graduate Manual may not match
this page.
| Master's Degree |
Students in the M.A. and M.S. programs are required to
complete the following departmental curricular requirements.
Students without prior minimal course work in mathematics
must remedy this deficiency by enrollment in approved courses
in the Department of Mathematics.
Students without prior minimal course work in statistics will
take one approved course in the Department of Statistics.
Students in Urban and Regional Systems, Spatial Analysis Methods
and the Climatology track of Atmospheric and Climatic Studies
whose backgrounds are deemed deficient in course work in the
discipline of geography may be required to take appropriate
remedial work. This requirement is not applicable to students
in the Atmospheric Sciences track of Atmospheric and Climatic
Studies.
Geography 883.01 and 883.02, a two-quarter sequence in quantitative
analysis (Geography students only).
Students should posses prior proficiency in mapping and GIS,
or should enroll in an appropriate course at OSU to gain this
proficiency (most applicable to Geography students).

| Ph.D. Degree |
Students in the Ph.D. program are required to complete
the following departmental curricular requirements. Flexible
programs of study are stressed at the doctoral level so these
requirements are minimal.
Students who did not earn their Master's degree at Ohio State
must demonstrate proficiency or take course work to satisfy
departmental core requirements for the M.A. or M.S.
Students in Urban and Regional Systems, Spatial Analysis Methods
and the Climatology track of Atmospheric and Climatic Studies
will take Geography 882, The Development of Geographic Thought.
Students in the Atmospheric Sciences track of Atmospheric
and Climatic Studies will take an equivalent course in the
history of meteorology (Atmospheric Science 881).
Students must take Geography 983, Special Topics in Quantitative
Geography or an equivalent course that provides advanced methodological
training. |
