| Over
more than two decades, OSU Geography has been consistently ranked
in the top handful of geography departments in the United States.
The department began offering graduate
work in the early 1920s, and became established as an
innovative and influential program in the 1960s. In the current academic
year, we have 21 regular faculty on the Columbus campus and
four regular faculty at Ohio State's regional campuses, as well
as 26 emeritus, adjunct and courtesy appointments.
Located within the department is Ohio State's
Atmospheric
Science Program (ASP), a separate interdisciplinary course
of study, offering its own graduate degrees. ASP was founded
in 1971 and was attached to the department in 1986. Seven
faculty in several departments across the university are affiliated
with ASP in addition to those in Geography.
Graduate work in OSU Geography reflects faculty interests
in the following areas:
The Atmospheric and Climatic Studies track includes students pursuing degrees in both Geography-Climatology
and Atmospheric Sciences. Currently, about 84 are enrolled
in programs leading to graduate degrees, of whom 45 are pursuing
PhD degrees and the remainder are in MA or MS programs. Most
graduate students are employed as Teaching Assistants, and
contribute to the department's teaching mission in our introductory
courses, or as Research Assistants, working on funded faculty
research projects.
The topical concentrations in our undergraduate program parallel
those in the graduate program. There are currently around
190 undergraduate majors in our program and we emphasize transferable
skills intended to heighten employment prospects as well as
specific topical knowledge.
The department is located in the pleasant, recently-renovated
Derby Hall, situated on the north side of the Oval, central
to the Ohio State campus. On the ground and first floors of
this building are faculty, graduate student and administrative
offices, laboratories for spatial analysis, atmospheric analysis
and numerical cartography/GIS, and a classroom for computer-based
instruction in all these (and other) topical areas.
The Ohio State University is located in Columbus,
Ohio,
a cosmopolitan city of over one million
people and the state capitol.
Many aspects of the strengths of the department and its contributions
to the disciplines of geography and the atmospheric sciences
