Measures of Quality for Ohio State's Department of Geography
  • In the 1995 National Research Council report on research-doctorate graduate programs in the United States, OSU Geography was ranked 5th highest in the nation in terms of reputation (with 77% of the evaluators rating the department as "distinguished" or "strong"), and 4th in terms of program effectiveness.

  • This latest assessment follows over two decades of consistently high national rankings.

  • External support currently totals approximately $3.5 million, from a variety of sources that include the following: Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA), National Geographic Society (NGS), National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Science Foundation (NSF), Ohio Board of Regents, and United States Department of Agriculture.

  • Five of OSU Geography's current and emeritus faculty (Larry Brown, Emilio Casetti, Kevin Cox, Duane Marble, John Rayner) have received Honors Awards from the Association of American Geographers (that organization's most significant recognition), more than any other Department of Geography in North America.

  • Both Larry Brown and Kevin Cox have received the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.

  • Four of our current and emeritus faculty (Larry Brown, Emilio Casetti, Kevin Cox, Ellen-Mosely-Thompson) have received Ohio State University Distinguished Scholar Awards.

  • Five current faculty have been awarded Ohio State University Distinguished Teaching Awards (Bill Ackerman, Larry Brown, Jay Hobgood, Randy Smith, Paul Robbins).

  • Randy Smith has received the first Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service at Ohio State.

  • Kevin Cox and Larry Brown have been named University Distinguished Professor, the highest recognition for faculty at Ohio State.

  • Ed Malecki was selected as a 2003 Joan N. Huber Faculty Fellow by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, its highest recognition for scholarship.

  • Harold Moellering is a recipient of the John Wesley Powell Award, awarded by the U.S. Geological Survey. He was also elected an Honorary Fellow at the International Cartographic Association in 2003.

  • Morton O'Kelly, Mei-Po Kwan, Ed Malecki and Harold Moellering have been recognized as Ameritech Fellows.

  • Ellen Mosley-Thompson was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame in October 2003.

  • Five faculty are or have been recently Chairs or members of National Academy of Sciences Committees (Ellen Mosley-Thompson, Harold Moellering, David Bromwich, Joel Morrison, Ed Malecki), and eleven are or have been recently on National Science Foundation Panels (Larry Brown, Emilio Casetti, Nancy Ettlinger, Mei-Po Kwan, Ed Malecki, Duane Marble, Harold Moellering, Ellen Mosley-Thompson, Morton O'Kelly, David Bromwich, Joel Morrison) and the National Institutes of Health, Social Science and Population Panel (Larry Brown).

  • Ten faculty members are on the editorial boards of 19 international journals and the internationally recognized journal Geographical Analysis was founded in the department, is currently edited by Alan Murray and is published by The Ohio State University Press.

  • Twenty-nine Ph.D.s were awarded in the period from academic year 1999-2000 to 2003-2004. OSU Geography and Atmospheric Science degrees have proven extremely competitive in obtaining appointments at major universities in the United States and in other countries.

  • Many graduates of the department have achieved positions as Chairs of Departments of Geography or related units.

  • Other destinations for graduates of the department include consulting positions (e.g. SMART, Washington, DC), prestigious research organizations (e.g. NASA Goddard Space Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, ERDAS), the private sector (e.g. Nationwide Insurance, Bank One, ESRI, AEP, MAPINFO, Ameritech) and governmental bodies (e.g. National Weather Service, US Air Force, FBI).

  • Approximately 80 graduate students are currently in residence, of whom the majority are supported by funding.

  • Citation Analysis for Human Geography places one of our former students (John Agnew) and four of our current and emeritus faculty (Larry Brown, Emilio Casetti, Kevin Cox, Ed Malecki) among the fifty most cited human geographers in the world.

  • The Department has a strong commitment to teaching. This includes outreach at the public school level through the Ohio Geographic Alliance (which has its home at Ohio State), and participation by nearly all faculty in University service-level courses.

  • There are approximately 220 undergraduate student majors. The Gourman Report (A Rating of Undergraduate Programs in American & International Universities) rates OSU's undergraduate program as 5th in the nation, with a score of 4.75/5.

  • Linda Bryant, the Department's Administrative Associate, has been awarded a University Distinguished Staff Award.

  • See the Department featured in the OSU Faculty and Staff Newspaper, OnCampus.
