Environmental issues are important to Americans and protecting
and
conserving rivers are a priority. Ninety percent of Americans
say that they
are concerned about the environmental quality and appearance
of our nations
rivers. But a majority of Americans lack an awareness of how
they are
interconnected to watersheds and that an interrelationship exists
between
human action and rivers. Americans express a strong willingness
to take
action specifically to help conserve our rivers but express the
sentiment of
I dont know how I can help.
Through Geography Action! Rivers 2001 you can make a difference.
Get
involved with National Geographics Geography Action! and
help your
students and community to understand how they can help make
a difference in
the use, changing and conserving of rivers and water. Start by
logging on
the NGS website at www.nationalgeographic.com/geographyaction.
You will
find activities for K-12 students which are designed to make
geography
relevant and fun, while providing a framework for examining
conservation-related issues. You will also find ways to take
action for
rivers, link to river conservation groups, and learn about rivers.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!!
Do something somewhere. It doesnt matter how big or how small
the action
is. Every action is important for our rivers. Get your hands
wet in water
activities. Involve your family, friends, and community in a
local river
project. Check with local groups, such as park districts, scout
groups,
church youth groups, etc., to see what they may be doing or will
do for the
local watershed and river. And teach about rivers in your classes!
REPORT, REPORT, REPORT!!
If you do anything for rivers or teach about rivers you are involved
and we
want to know what you and your community are doing. Watch
your local paper
for any river activities that are reported. Contact the local
media about
Geography Action!.If your local paper has a Newspapers In Education
reporter, contact them. Cut out any information you see
and send it to me.
If you take pictures of water activities, please send me a copy
and get
press coverage of your activities. Please report by December
15, 2001 even
if you have tentatively scheduled your activity for later in
the school
year.
